The purpose was to find out the current situation and competence needs of building information modeling and especially the use of open BIM in the building construction industry. The research was related to the BIM-ICE project, which aims to increase the use of BIM in construction and to develop training in Finland and Russia. The thesis was part of current situation survey prior to the development work.
Survey and interview research were used as research methods. The survey examined the knowledge of people working in the building construction industry in Finland about BIM, the knowledge of software and the need for training in its use, the use of information models in building construction projects, competence needs for projects and views on the future of information modeling in Finland. The interview study examined the use of BIM in the interviewees' projects, the organization of projects in terms of BIM, and views on how the models should be used in the future and what kind of data model expertise would be needed in the building construction industry in the future.
In the survey there was 90 respondents and 4 responded to the interview. The number was quite good, but the results may not be directly generalized to whole building construction industry in Finland. There were quite comprehensive representatives of different ages and different parties in building projects. Not only BIM experts had been selected as respondents. Knowledge of concepts and software varied. In the projects there was used both open data transfer methods and the software's own file formats. BIM was used in projects e.g. visualization, quantity and cost accounting and design coordination. More know-how and ways of using the models were seen as needed e.g. at the site during the construction phase. In the future, use of BIM was seen to increase, also in smaller and renovation projects, where the models are not yet used as often. The main conclusion of the study was that open BIM is used, but not as much and in a variety of ways as would be possible.
