The idea for the thesis stemmed from a need to research how ergonomics and physics affected drumming. My own and other drummers’ experience showed that there is a lack of knowledge when it comes to teach ing ergonomics and physics to new students. The goal of the thesis was to bring to light theoretical infor mation about the topics that beginner drummer learns in the early stages of drumming and to explain it as simply as possible.
The thesis was a narrative literature review with the aim to study the biggest ergonomic and physical factors that affect the playing of a snare drum. Ergonomic part of the thesis dealt with the humans’ anatomical per spective, and how this knowledge could inform the way the drummer assembles the drum kit and plays the drums. The section that describes the physical point of view studies the relation between a hand, a drumstick, and the drum itself.
Data for the narrative literature review was collected from literature, different web articles, and from video platform YouTube.
Results showed that the biggest affects when it comes to snare drum playing is the drummers’ posture and the skeletal positioning. Movement and the position of the spine and the hips are the basis for all movement around the drums. Results also showed that ergonomic awareness is a big part of a healthy life.
