The issues of waste management in Russia are of high urgency and serious necessity as around 90% of all waste are disposed to landfills. The construction and demolition waste stream is one of the largest waste streams globally. There are plenty of opportunities to put building materials back into the technical loops and to develop the circular economy in the country. The sound planning of waste management activities would stimulate economic growth and reduce environmental impacts.
International companies also face waste processing challenges in Russia. The commissioner of this thesis is YIT Moscow. YIT is the largest Finnish and major Northern European construction company and urban developer. The company is aimed at reducing the environmental impact of YIT`s own operations and the operations of sub-contractors to provide a sustainable built environment. The general objective of the thesis is to characterize how the construction sector should systematically plan to increase the circularity of building materials and to analyze the main driving forces and barriers of construction waste management in Russia.
The theoretical review includes construction and demolition waste in circulation, quality management, involving local construction industry and public sector, and, especially, the aspect of the demolition waste. The empirical part handles Russian legislation and data reported from the YIT construction sites. This part also includes the analysis of the market barriers and opportunities towards material circulation, and, benchmarking and found practices for the further improvements of YIT`s waste management in Russia.
