The purpose of the thesis was to study how the target company could utilize the existing free trade agreements in the Asian regions more effectively in its spare parts import process. The study delved deeper into the free trade agreement between the European Union and South Korea and its implications.
For the theoretical part of the study, information was collected on the trade relationship between Finland and South Korea, the history, purposes, and objectives of the free trade agreement. The theoretical part also looked at the target company's import and customs clearance process and the factors affecting them. The aim was to get an overall picture of the different stages of the company's spare parts import process and its current state. Based on the information gathered, a general guide was compiled, which provides recommendations for action to improve operations.
Thematic interviews were used to collect the empirical material of the study, for which four employees of the target company were interviewed. These employees represented different areas of expertise. The same semi-structured interview framework was used for the interviews, but with all the interviewees, each topic was not covered to the same extent and the interviews were tailored to their areas of expertise. Another research method was self-observation, which supported the conducted interviews and helped to better understand the research subject.
The investigation revealed that these free trade agreements in the Asian region haven’t been used in the spare parts import process. Based on these results, it was concluded that there is much scope for increasing the use of the agreements. However, awareness of free trade agreements needs to be increased and guidance provided to the Korean branch on the issues required for customs invoices.
