Tutkimuskysymykset olivat: mitä yksilöllisiä tuen tarpeita yleisellä tuen tasolla lapsella on, miten lapsen yleisen tuen tarpeet huomioidaan, miten käytännössä lasta tuetaan yleisellä tuen tasolla ja mitä haasteita tuen toteutuksessa mahdollisesti on.
The purpose of this thesis was to find out how kindergarten teachers acknowledge the children’s needs for general support and how they implement it. The research interviewed kindergarten teachers and collected their experiences from early childhood education. The objective of the thesis was to improve knowledge from general level support as well as collect from the interview’s potential needs for development.
The thesis was carried out as a qualitative study. The research material was collected from four different kindergartens, and five kindergarten teachers gave an interview. The data was collected through theme interviews. The themes included children’s individual needs, the acknowledgment of the needs for support and the potential challenges. The interview material was recorded and transcribed. During the analysis of the material classification was used. The research questions covered the following: what are the children’s individual needs for general support, how the needs for general support are acknowledged, how the children are supported in practice in a general level and what the potential challenges are that prevent general support from being implemented.
According to the research results, the main needs for general support included the child’s cognitive control, developmental disorders, gross motor skills and language challenges. The most important tools for acknowledging the need for general support were the national and the child’s core curriculum for early childhood education and care, as well as care and observation. The main forms of support were small-group activities, pictures, keyword signs, coherent daily routines, and the adults’ presence. The biggest challenges were insufficient staff, the children’s varying care hours, physical spaces that failed to work, large group sizes and challenges in communication with the parents.
The results indicated that the need for general support varies and there are many different forms of support that are offered in day care. According to the results, the national and the child’s personal core curriculum for early childhood education and care, as well as observing the children were the main tools for charting and acknowledging the needs for support in day care. The experiences of the kindergarten teachers revealed that the biggest obstacles that prevent the acknowledgement of the need for support were resources and too few workers, and the children’s varying care hours also caused challenges.
