The aim of this study was to improve children’s heart health knowledge. An event that improves heart health was organized for 6 th graders in Säkylä primary school. Säkylä health center was the employer of this study. The event was done in co-operation with Säkylä primary school and school health nurse.
The purpose of this study was to improve the 6 th graders knowledge of heart health. The other purpose was to get the pupils to think about their own health in the long run and to get them to set suitable health goals for themselves. The aim for authors was to develop and learn to act as a part of a professional workgroup, to answer for a project and to add knowledge of how to prevent cardiovascular diseases.
An inquiry that surveyed the pupils’ earlier health knowledge was used to plan this project, in addition to written material. The Finnish Heart Association also gave material for the event. The event was held on the schoolyard during the national heart week in autumn 2020. Healthy nutrition, enough sleep and healthy exercise were our main topics. Pupils went around and performed different heart health tasks as a group. Tasks included a quiz, a “sugar cube exhibition”, a ball game and a relaxation moment in the woods. After these activities, pupils made health goals for themselves and they and the teacher gave written feedback of the event. Self-evaluation was also made during the project.
The pandemic had an effect on the progress of this study but luckily the final event could be organized as planned. Aims of this study were achieved both for authors and the target group. According to the feedback, most of the participants got new information about heart health from the event. Everyone made health goals for themselves and most of them planned to fulfill them. The event was inspiring and successful. This thesis improved our project management skills and made us take professional responsibility.
The impacts of this hearth health event can be evaluated by finding out how the set goals have been achieved. Setting repeated health goals and organizing this kind of events can be a good part of health education. Could children’s hearth health be improved more effectively by multi professional collaboration?
