The aim of the study is to find out the amount of packaging metal in energy- and construction waste from business communities in order to obtain consistent information about metal packages that end up in recycling, as well as to create reliable statistics to help future decisions. Aggregate samples were obtained through the Mepak-recycling Ltd. community.
The samples were collected from Pori, Kauttua and Kouvola areas and delivered to Aittoluoto’s industrial estate in Veikko Lehti Ltd.’s. Sorting of the samples took place between June and November of 2020.
In the covered and permanently coated hall, the samples were spread with a bucket loader after weighting on top of a protective cover to facilitate final cleaning.
Sample batches were manually sorted from the top of the cover into four different fractions. To the reject fraction, which included all non-metal packaging particles, and to three metal packaging fractions. The first fraction included all the metal packaging lids, caps and straps. The second fraction consisted of metal jars and to the third of empty aerosol cans, which were weighted after separation for results.
The common percentages of metal packages compared to total weights of the samples remained close to each other between batches, with the largest difference being 7,5%.
The differences between different fractions between the samples were larger, with the largest difference per fraction being 21,4 %.
