The purpose of this thesis was to broaden the professional understanding of honour-related violence by studying the experiences of violence related to the honour of Christians of a Muslim background. The phenomenon is poorly identified in Finland and more information is needed on this topic. The aim of the work was to develop services in the social, health and diaconia sectors, to increase the religious literacy of professionals and to defend the target group's right to freedom of religion.
The thesis was carried out as a qualitative study. The data was collected through semi-structured thematic interviews in early 2020. Four people were interviewed for the study: two Christians of a Muslim background and two experts. The collected data was analysed using content analysis.
The findings show that Christians of a Muslim background face in their community severe discrimination and violence as a result of their conversions to Christianity. These actions are motivated by the fear of the loss of honour of the family and the community, as well as by factors defined by religion. The threat of physical violence and the risk of being killed increases considerably in the country of origin of the converted, but a serious threat of violence can also be experienced in Finland. Various experiences of violence cause health issues to the target group, such as depression and insomnia. Avoidance behaviour is aimed at preventing conflicts, and this restricts an individual's freedom of choice, for example in terms of work and mobility. Based on the data, the family and the Muslim community view the Christian convert to varying degrees. Some exert strong pressure on the convert and exclude them from the community, others interpret the faith of Islam more flexibly, gradually adapting to the change in life.
The conclusions of the study are that information on the phenomenon and the related root causes should be taken to the different sections in the structures of society. In developing the services targeted at the group, it would be necessary to make use of the experiences of parishes and the converted Christians. More systematic recording of violent cases would make the phenomenon more visible. Developing dialogue with Muslim communities would be important.
