Tiivistelmä
Suomessa syöpään sairastuu vuosittain noin 130–150 lasta. Leukemia on yleisin lapsien syöpätaudeista: siihen sairastuu vuosittain noin 50 lasta.
Nämä piirteet korostuivat erityisesti palliatiivisen hoidon kohdalla. Tulosten mukaan eri perheenjäsenten tukemisessa huomioidaan yksilöllisyys. Perheen voimavarojen vahvistamisen merkitys on tulosten mukaan suuri esimerkiksi vertaistuen kautta. Kehittämisideana on muun muassa opaslehtinen sairaanhoitajien perehdyttämiseksi perheen tukemisesta. Annually, approximately 130-150 children fall ill with cancer in Finland. Leukaemia is the most common cancer in children: about 50 new cases are diagnosed every year. The impact of a child’s illness affects to the entire family and requires the ability to adapt to a new kind of situation. Therefore, nurses have a significant role in supporting the family. Encountering the whole family respectfully and perceiving individual needs should be considered. Nurses’ responsibilities include being available according to the needs of the family. The purpose of this thesis was to explore how nurses experience supporting families in the Paediatric Haematology and Oncology Ward at Kuopio University Hospital. The target group of this thesis were the nurses working there. The aim of the thesis was to develop support for families in nursing. The research task was to find out how nurses describe supporting the families of children with leukaemia. The thesis was implemented as a qualitative research. The data was collected through a semi-structured interview.
Based on the results, providing support for the whole family extends throughout the treatment period from the first encounter to the child’s recovery or possible death. The family is also supported after the child’s death by offering a contact to complete the clinical pathway. The results emphasized responding to the conditions and wishes of the families. Genuine presence and listening throughout the treatment period were experienced as important and especially in palliative care. Individuality is considered in supporting different family members. Strengthening family resources, for example through peer support, was seen as important.
