Tiivistelmä
Cheerleading ja cheertanssi vaativat urheilijalta monipuolisia taitoja ja ominaisuuksia, kuten räjähtävää voimantuottoa ja hyvää liikkuvuutta. Uusien taitojen oppiminen vaatii suurta toistomäärää esimerkiksi akrobaattisia suorituksia ja nostoja, jotka kuormittavat kehoa monipuolisesti. Alle 18-vuotiailla tytöillä cheerleading on yhdeksänneksi yleisin vammoja aiheuttava urheiluseuraharrastus Suomessa. Eturistisidevamman riskiä on mahdollista pienentää oikeanlaisella harjoittelulla.
Valmentajia kouluttamalla saadaan harjoitteet siirrettyä osaksi urheilijoiden viikoittaista harjoittelua.
Cheerleading and cheerdance requires a variety of skills and features of the athlete, such as explosive strength and extreme mobility. Learning new skills requires high numbers of repetitions for example acrobatic performances and stunts which put versatile strain on a body. Cheerleading is the ninth most common sport to cause injuries for girls under the age of 18 in Finland. Most injuries occur to the knees and ankles. Knee injuries account for about 15 % of all injuries in cheerleading and are common also in cheerdance. The most common ligament injuries of the knee are the injuries of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The risk of ACL injury could be diminished with proper training.
The aim of the thesis was to plan and arrange training session for cheerleading and cheerdance coaches. The client organization of the thesis was Cheer Stars ry. Based on statistics on cheerleading injuries and the athletes’ lack of knee control, preventing ACL injuries with knee control exercises was chosen as the topic of the training session. The aim of this development work was to get acquainted with the emergence, risk factors and prevention of the ACL injuries and that way increase expertise in this subject. The aim of the training session was to increase participants’ knowledge about the effect of knee control and instruct exercises that prevent ACL injuries and that they could use in their own coaching.
The training session included a theoretical lecture and a practical section. The theoretical lecture included theory of the prevalence of ACL injuries in cheerleading and cheerdance, the anatomical structures of the knee, risk factors for ACL injuries and the role of muscle control in injury prevention. A total of four exercises and their variations were selected for the practical section. In the practical section, the coaches got to try out the exercises themselves and practice the observation of the knee alignment in pairs.
The feedback received on the training session was positive and the coaches found the training session useful. Most of the participants had no previous knowledge of the topic, which indicates the need for this kind of training. The feedback from the coaches also showed that there is a desire for more similar training sessions, for example on ankle and core control. There should be more research data and statistics about injuries related to cheerleading and cheerdance. The data should be collected separately about cheerleading and cheerdance due to their differences.
