Tiivistelmä
Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli verrata lypsylehmien ensikkokaudella kertyneitä sairauksien hoitomerkintöjä immuunivasteen genotyyppiin. Tutkimus toteutettiin yhdessä keskisuuressa suomalaisessa lypsykarjassa, jossa genomitestattiin 91 kanadalaisten holstein-sonnien tytärtä, ja jaoteltiin ne eri immuunivasteiden voimakkuuden perusteella kolmeen ryhmään. Tutkimuksessa vertailtiin näiden eläinten Nasevan hoitotietomerkintöjä sekä ”Minun Maatilani”- sovellukseen kirjattuja siemennysmerkintöjä genomitestien tuloksiin perinnöllisestä immuunivasteesta. Työn toimeksiantajana toimi Semex Finland Oy, joka on Suomessa toimiva kanadalaista lypsykarjan genetiikkaa ja palveluita jälleenmyyvä yritys.
Lypsylehmien terveyden jalostaminen on nykypäivänä yksi tärkeimmistä jalostustavoitteista maidontuotantotiloilla. Korkea maidontuotanto asettaa lehmän alttiiksi useille tuotantorasitussairauksille.
Tutkimuksen tulokset olivat vaihtelevia.
The aim of this bachelor’s thesis was to compare the medical history records from the first lactation to the genotyped immune response results of Holstein cows. The study was conducted in one mid-sized dairy farm. 91 Holstein cows were genotyped for their genetic immune response and categorized into three groups based on the test results. These results were compared to the medical history records and insemination records of the cows during the first lactation. This thesis was commissioned by Semex Finland Ltd. Semex Finland Ltd provides Canadian dairy genetics and other genetic related services in Finland as a subsidiary to Canadian company Semex Alliance.
Improving the health of the cattle is one of the most important breeding goals on dairy farms. High milk production is always a burden on the cow’s health. Healthy, easy care and long-lasting cows are something to pursue, not only from an economic point of view but also from ethical aspects. The health of the cattle can be improved by taking care of their immune system. The strength of the immune system is partially a genetic trait and partially result of environmental effects. Genetic immune response can be improved by selecting cows and bulls with a high estimated breeding value for the genetic immune response. Traditional health traits based on health recordings are difficult to breed due to low heritability. Genetic immune response on the other hand has as high heritability as production traits and many conformation traits.
The results of the study are varied. Cows with a high genetic immune response had clearly the lowest amount of medical treatments on average. But the results were not systematic in every disease and immune response group. The differences were not as big between average and low genetic immune response groups, as they were between high genetic immune response group and others.
Narrow sample of only 91 cows, was a challenge for the study. In narrow sample like this even one medical record on specific disease, has high impact on the results. The cows in the study were genetically very similar to each other in their immune response. The results could be more reliable if the study included dozens of herds and hundreds of cows.
