Tiivistelmä
Kiinasta leviämään alkanut, koko maailmaa koskettavan häiriötilanteen aiheuttanut COVID-19-pandemia on pysäyttänyt globaalin maailman tavalla, jollaista ihmiskunta ei ole kokenut. COVID-19-taudin aiheuttama häiriötilanne on vaikuttanut maailmantalouden lisäksi niin yksittäisten ihmisten, valtioiden, kuin yritystenkin toimintaan.
Tässä opinnäytetyössä pohditaan COVID-19-taudin aiheuttaman häiriötilanteen vaikutuksia kuluttajamarkkinoilla toimivien yritysten markkinointiviestintään. Tarkoitus on selvittää miten kuluttajamarkkinoilla toimivat yritykset ovat mahdollisesti muuttaneet markkinointiviestinnällisiä toimenpiteitään tukeakseen liiketoimintaansa koronaviruksen aiheuttamassa kysyntäshokissa. Muutosten havaitsemiseksi eri aloilla toimivien yritysten edustajien kanssa on tehty teemahaastatteluja. Tutkimusmenetelmänä käytetään Theory Building from Case Studies -menetelmää, joka mahdollistaa uuden ilmiön tutkimisen teorian muodostamiseksi.
Opinnäytetyöhön haastatellaan kuluttajamarkkinoilla toimivista yrityksistä Omena Hotelsin, Laakkonen Autokonsernin, mySafety Oy:n sekä Paulig Groupin edustajia. Haastatteluista ilmenee, että jokainen yritys on COVID-19-pandemian aiheuttamassa häiriötilanteessa muuttanut markkinointiviestintää omaan toimintaansa sopivalla tavalla. Myös alakohtaisia eroja on havaittavissa. Joillekin yrityksille häiriötilanne on aiheuttanut kysynnän radikaalin vähenemisen, mikä on heikentänyt tulosta. Tämä on johtanut toisaalta digitaalisten markkinointikanavien korostumiseen, mutta myös taktisempaan markkinointiviestintään. Haastatteluista saatujen tulosten pohjalta on muodostettu teoria, jonka mukaan häiriötilanteessa, jossa muutoksia tapahtuu nopeasti eikä tulevaisuutta kyetä normaaliolojen tapaan ennustamaan pitkälle aikavälille, tulee markkinointiviestintää tehdä strategisen sijaan taktisesti.
The COVID-19 pandemic, originated from China, has caused a worldwide state of disruption which shut down the global world in a way that humanity has never experienced before. The disruption caused by COVID-19 has affected not only the economy but also the activities of individuals, states and companies.
This thesis looks into the effects of the disturbance caused by the COVID-19 on the marketing communications of companies operating in the consumer market. The aim is to find out how companies operating in the consumer market possibly have changed their marketing communications measures to support their business in the demand shock caused by the COVID-19. In order to detect the changes, thematic interviews are conducted with representatives of companies operating in different business sectors. The research method used is Theory Building from Case Studies, which enables the study of a new phenomenon to form a theory.
Representatives of companies operating in the consumer market were interviewed. The interviews show that in the event of a disruption caused by COVID-19, each company has changed its marketing communications measures in a way that suits the company’s own operations. There are also industry-specific differences between the companies. For some companies, the disruption has caused a radical drop in demand, which has weakened the result. This has led, on the one hand, to an increase in the use of digital marketing channels, but also to more tactical marketing communications. Based on the results of the interviews, a theory has been formed that in a disruptive situation where changes occur quickly and the future cannot be predicted for the long term as normal, marketing communications should be done tactically instead of strategically.
The findings in this thesis show that COVID-19 has affected all companies operating in the consumer market, although the virus has negatively affected not all of them. By being able to quickly change their operations as required by the operating environment, and by actively monitoring the changes caused by the pandemic, companies have even been able to develop their operations. By making changes to their marketing communications, companies have also been able to contribute to their success even in unstable conditions.
