Havainnointi tapahtui Turun kaupunginkirjaston digituessa.
The purpose of this thesis was to find out how the competence of the staff of Turku City Library meets the needs of the customers in the guidance of digital services. The aim was also to demonstrate how digitalisation affects library work and the expansion of the areas of expertise for the library staff.
In this thesis, the information about digitalisation and the role of public libraries in digitalisation was gathered via written sources, statistics and interviews with specialists. The specialist interviews as well as observation were used as the methods to study the guidance of digital services of the staff and the needs of the customers. The interviews and observation were conducted in the fall of 2020. The interviews were conducted by e-mail and the questions were open-ended. The responses to the interviews were analyzed by content analysis. The observation took place in the digital support of Turku City Library.
Based on the observation, the customers are satisfied with the service that they have received and the competence of the staff meets the needs of the customers. However, based on the interviews, it can be stated that the staff finds the guidance of the customers in IT matters burdensome due to the lack of time. The results showed that the needs for development were to make IT basics and terminology familiar to customers and to implement digital support by appointment, regardless of the day.
