The purpose of this study is to research what animal testing in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals is, how and why animal testing is done within the cosmetics industry and pharmaceutical industry. In this thesis, the respondent will touch on subjects like the history of animal tests, laws and regulations, to name a few. What the respondent wants with this thesis, is to educate other students and professionals within the beauty industry. In addition to that, the respondent wants to become more aware while deepening their knowledge on animal testing.
For the theoretical study, a questionnaire was used as a data collecting method. The material was analyzed by using the method content analysis, in order to create the result.
While the theory and research chapters fill the purpose for this thesis, the study focuses on the knowledge and opinions the professionals within the beauty industry has regarding animal testing. The result shows that people within the industry are aware of animal testing and that it is a topic that often is mentioned in everyday situations without being discussed in a more thorough manner. Animal testing is seen as a negative phenomenon that contributes to animal cruelty and abuse. The professionals within the beauty industry wants alternative methods to be used. Unfortunately, alternative methods are not available to replace all animal testing. Consumers can have a hard time knowing who to trust when it comes to the information on whether animal testing has been used or not.
