The phenomenon of over-debt has become a significant problem in our society. Direct and indirect consequences affect the individuals and their social relationships reducing the physical, mental and social well-being of individuals. Housing support services which are included into the social services for adults, support those with over-debt problems by using economic social welfare services. The co-operation partners of this thesis were the ASTA Sub Venture of the Social Services of Espoo and Takuusäätiö.
The purpose of this multi-method thesis was to find out those elements which should be among the tools of the economic social welfare services in order to meet the hopes and needs of clients and professionals of social services. The goal was to increase the understanding of the hopes and needs of over-debt individuals, to promote the activities and services of our partners and to produce ideas for developing economic support methods and tools. There were two research question: What kind of support is hoped and needed for over-debt clients and what kind of hopes and needs for tools of economic social welfare services are expected by professionals who work with preventing homelessness.
The qualitative thematic interviews were implemented with a participant of the financial group coaching of the ASTA Sub Venture of Espoo and a financial expert by experience of Espoo social services for adults. The thematic interviews were analysed by inductive-based content analysis. The other method used was the quantative Webropol survey, which was mailed in a newsletter to the people working on prevention of homelessness among Housing First Model network developers. The number of the responses received was 25.
The results were compared with each other and with the theoretical framework. The main results highlighted were the wishes and needs for the tools and methods used and the professional approach in a client meeting. According to the results the responsibility of the preventive work belongs to society. The professional approach should be empathetic and understanding and the support should be concrete joint activities. The tools and methods used should be flexible and applicable to different life situations. The role for the peer support and the expertise by experience emerged strongly. Based on the results the idea was to develop financial group coaching for the unemployed.
