The purpose of this study is to see how the siblings of an addict are affected by the addiction. An addiction will affect the whole family, there will be an exchange of roles adopted in the family and new constellations will be formed. I have primarily examined how the sibling’s everyday life and the relations to the addict have been affected. An addiction affects the human body in several negative ways, psychologically as well as physiologically and this influences everyone in this person’s immediate environment.
My questions at issue were how the relationship between the sibling and the addict has been affected by the addiction, how the sibling’s everyday life has been affected, if the sibling’s view on other addict has changed and what kind of help and support the sibling has got and also if it has been experienced as enough.
Based on qualitative interviews with four respondents having a sibling with an addiction, the questions at issue were answered. The results demonstrated that the most profound effect concerned their mental strength in everyday life and their mental well-being. The sibling’s relationship with the addict was impaired. The psychological assistance offered to the siblings was considered sufficient, but they had received none to very little information where it could be found.
