Tutkimus toteutettiin narratiivisen haastattelun keinoin. Haastattelut toteutettiin Kriminaalihuollon tukisäätiön tiloissa vuoden 2020 alussa.
The purpose of this thesis was to disclose the life stories of two peer support counsellors who work for Kriminaalihuollon tukisäätiö, and to bring up points in the life story which have brought them into working as peer support counsellors. The aim of this thesis was to amplify the voices and the experiences of people with a background of substance dependency and crime, and therefore strengthen their agency and involvement in the society.
The material for this study was collected using the means of narrative interview. The interviews were executed in Kriminaalihuollon tukisäätiö premises in the beginning of the year 2020. The forms of narrative analysis that were applied are holistic-content and holistic-form. In addition, the concept of plot was used.
The results showed that there were similarities in the life experiences of the counsellors as well as there were similarities in the structure of the life stories. These experiences included an early disengagement from the parents and the usage of substances from an early age, amongst other things. There were also similarities in the parts of the life stories which brought them into working as peer support counsellors. The most significant result was the concept of involvement and its immediate concepts such as peer support, expert-by-experience and the possibility to influence and act.
In conclusion, it can be said that people with a background of substance dependency and crime tend to have similar life experiences; lived experiences are the basis of being peers. Experiencing one’s own experiences as valid, the possibilities to influence as well as belonging to a group are a part of being involved and having agency. Feelings of belonging allow participating and participating enforces the feeling of belonging. Sharing life experiences strengthens one’s participation and agency.
