Background. The number of medical equipment in the world, including Kazakhstan, has increased in recent years. This increases the availability of diagnostic care for the general population. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a specialized, widespread diagnostic method that does not use x‐rays to visualize internal organs. According to meta‐analysis, about 71.6% of radiologists indicated the most common complaint was fear and anxiety in patients during an MRI scan.
Objective: To identify the methods of emotional support of patients known and used by radiology nurses and technicians before and during the MRI procedure, to create a recommendation of actions for radiology nurses and technicians in cases when the patient is frightened by an MRI examination.
Methods: A mixed study was conducted from December 2019 to March 2020 in which 56 nurses and technicians were surveyed. For research, a questionnaire was developed on the Webropol surveys platform. The critical incident method was used to collect qualitative data that was analysed using qualitative content analysis.
Results: Data analysis identified methods known to nurses and technicians. The methods used by nurses and technicians were presented in four themes: provide the patient with detailed information about the upcoming examination, remain involved in the examination of the patient, interact with the patient during the examination, and verbal techniques to gain trust and to relax the patient.
Conclusion: Drawing from the results, recommendations have been developed for nurses and technicians that can be used in radiology departments. Additionally, they can be useful to educational and medical organizations and teachers to recognise what skills nurses need in such cases.
