The aim of this development project was to guarantee continuity and methodicalness of medication training in adult intensive care unit on Turku University Hospital. With this methodicalness was fulfilled the statutory training obligation of both the employer and the employee. The purpose of the development project was to scan the need of medication education and as a part of an overall training plan, to draw a medication training plan. There was a study, which was attached to this project and the information it was given, was used in preparation of the medication training plan.
By the results of the study within the development project the most wanted areas of medication education were combined effects of medicines, incompatibility of medicines, different kind of drug groups and fluid therapy. The education was hoped to be given as small-group teaching, lectures and bed-side teaching. In this training plan it was concentrated on the educational intervention from the results of the research as well as the induction and mentoring of colleagues. In the training plan there was also a desire to notice unbiassed access of education and to activate to study independently.
The frame of reference that was used in the implementation of this training plan was PEPPA. The key persons of the training plan are pharmacist of the ward, the doctors and the nurses from the medicine group. The materials from the educations will be saved electronically to be used by all the staff. The training subjects will be considered multiprofessionally and the training plan will be brought into use from the beginning of 2021. With this training plan it is desired to give to the healthcare staff a possibility to maintain and to improve their workmanship equally and methodically. Furthermore, with this educational intervention it is desired to increase patient safety.
