Koemenetelmän avulla on tarkoitus selvittää mahdollisuutta käyttää venekäyttöön suunniteltuja luukkuja katolle siirtymiseen.
The thesis was commissioned by Norsepower Oy Ltd which is a Finnish company that designs and manufactures rotor sails. Purpose of the thesis was to design a method to test hatches which shall be attached to the roof of a sail. Rotor sails are tall, cylindrical devices designed for energy production so their maintenance must be easy and efficient. Options for access on top of the sail are either use of an aerial work platform or to climb ropes inside the sail and go through a hatch in the middle of the sail. That hatch is not designed to be easily or quickly removed and it is difficult to access next to it with ropes.
The purpose of the test method is to determine the possibility of using hatches designed for boats to be used for access to roof. When the sails are in use, they rotate at high speed around their own axis, causing a large force on any item on the perimeter. Thus, hatches are wanted to be tested in advance to ensure that those are durable enough to be used on sails.
The thesis included a reflection on different testing options, calculation of forces, and background work on hatches and safety. One of the testing options was further developed into more detail and a plan was made up for its implementation.
As a result, a description of the testing method was created, which is to be implemented later in 2020 in cooperation with Norsepower and Turku University of Applied Sciences
