Wood is a widely used building material in Finland and it has been one of the most important building materials for centuries. Yet there are no studies of wood being a load-bearing material until 1990. Over the years the wood industry has had to work persistently to make wood a functional and cost -effective material for wooden apartment buildings. Engineer wood and new construction techniques are the basis for the current Finnish wooden apartment building construction.
The client of this thesis was Bonava Suomi Oy and its goal were to determine the weaknesses and strengths of the structural types of two wooden apartment buildings. One of the buildings was completed in the region of Varsinais-Suomi and the other one is in the process of beginning.
To compare the types of structures, the structural designer of both wooden apartment buildings and a person working in production were interviewed. Based on the interviews, the weaknesses and strengths of the structure types from a logistical, productional, fire technical and acoustical point of view were compiled into the thesis. The differences created by the types of structures and element were discovered by the interviews. Based on them it was possible to observe to strengths and weaknesses. The biggest differences were noticed in different stages of elementation that influenced every point of view. These discoveries can be used in the planning of a wooden apartment building project, as well as in further research in the wood construction industry.
The thesis concludes with a summary of the biggest strengths and weaknesses of different construction types and remarks the lack in standardization in wood construction. This should be developed because it would increase the effectiveness of wood construction. The most important discovery in the thesis was the differences established in construction type element.
