Tämän opinnäytetyön tavoitteena on selvittää, millaisia odotuksia seuratyölle asetetaan. Tuloksia varten on haastateltu viittä ihmistä käyttäen puolistrukturoidun teemahaastattelun menetelmää.
Physical exercise is one of the most common hobbies and many Finns belong to a sports or exercise club. Organisational activities demand a lot of work to function properly. The work is mainly done as a volunteer and everyone participates in it according to their abilities. The activity is often started due to different interests; one may find the desire to start because their hobby is meaningful to them while another might be inspired to start because of a friend encouraged them. Organizing volunteer work is not always easy. It is difficult to get volunteers involved because people are busy and precise about what they spend their free time on.
The aim of this thesis is to find out what kind of expectations are placed on sports club work. Five people have been interviewed using the semi-structured thematic interview method. Interviewees tell how they experience club and volunteer work as members and what they think about it. They wonder what makes them get involved in club activities and work for a common hobby. Club work and volunteering are perceived as invigorating in everyday life, where social relations are important. In the interviews, they say that they appreciated the co-operation between club members, the relationships that were formed and the feeling of doing something fun, as well as the readiness to approach working life which is due to club work.
Children are hard-working participants in social activities, but during adolescence many stop regular hobbies. Indeed, social activities are seen as meaningful when children and young people can enjoy the activity and parents are allowed to be involved in making it possible. The good effects of social activities, such as a sense of community and teaching to work, are to be passed on to one's own children.
Inequality can also be experienced in social activities. Members join the club for different reasons and therefore expectations are different. Inequality is reflected in the planning of activities and the perceived evaluation. A solution to this shortcoming is sought both among the members and in the activities of the board.
