The purpose of this thesis was to design a new user interface for a body composition analyzer located at the Turku University of Applied Sciences. The new user interface had to have better usability and clearer instructions than the current user interface so that every user can take a body composition measurement independently without any problems. Multiple issues had been experienced with the current user interface and these issues needed to be resolved.
The planning of the new user interface began by the author becoming familiar with the current user interface by testing it and by determining its faults. Four users took a body composition measurement using the current user interface. It was observed how each of them managed to take the measurement. After the measurement, they were asked for feedback and development ideas about the user interface and the whole measuring process.
The end users were determined and the technical functionality and visualization of the user interface were considered during the planning. A user central approach was used in the planning process. The heuristic list of Jakob Nielsen and the expertise of a health care professional were used as help. Furthermore, the information found in the source materials was also utilised in the planning process. The user interface designs were created with Photoshop.
One of the versions of the new user interface was tested in the form of a usability testing with five testees who were part of the end users of the new user interface. Based on the results that were obtained through the testing the new user interface was developed further.
As a result of this work, a new user interface which corrected the usability problems and shortcomings of the current user interface was designed.
