Tiivistelmä
This thesis focuses on the concept of career fairs within the events industry, specifically the ones aimed at students of the higher education sector. The scope is narrowed down to the last edition of Duuniin.net at Pasila campus, a fair that is organized annually by Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences.
The thesis is research oriented, and it was carried out between March and May of 2020. Its objective is to identify what are the most important factors that motivate students to attend Duuniin.net., what is their level of satisfaction with the way these needs are addressed, and whether demographic characteristics of the respondents, such as origin and field of study, have an effect on the issue.
The theoretical framework for the research briefly outlines some of the key concepts of events management and events planning. It also defines the role of research in events management, with an emphasis on customer satisfaction and market research. In addition, it includes a brief background information about Duuniin.net.
The research itself uses a quantitative approach and builds on the general information about the fair, as well as an earlier feedback form sent out by the organizer. The data was collected through a structured survey with questions about the demographic background of the students and their perceptions of the fair. The obtained data is analysed with the help of statistical methods, such as distribution and cross-tabulation.
The results of the research show clear differences between students of different origin regarding the perception of the fair, especially when it comes the factors that motivate them to visit Duuniin.net. The limitations of the data make it impossible to determine whether the degree programme is a relevant factor.
For Finnish respondents, special services, such as the professional photographer, proved to be the most important driver, while for the international respondents employment related issues are on the top of the list. The data also reveals that in several cases there is a mismatch between motivators and satisfaction. This is particularly true for the job-related services provided, which were poorly rated.
From the practical point of view, the outcome of the research offers an insight to the annual Duuniin.net regarding the current perception of the fair by the students. It underlines the fact that there are significant differences between demographics that need to be taken into account in the future development of the fair. It also offers additional information for the participating companies about the main target group of the fair.
