The calculation of carbon emissions will be part of the building regulations by 2025. The aim of this work is to help understand the theory and calculation of carbon emissions and discuss how different premises and materials affect the carbon emissions of the entire structure. The work illustrates the method for assessing the carbon footprint of buildings drafted by the Ministry of the Environment, on the basis of which official limit values and regulations will be prepared. The work describes how the emission factors have been were considered in the various manufacturing stages of the structure and how structural design can affect carbon emission.
The study used the One Click LCA calculation program as an aid to illustration and the calculations were implemented for the case site of a concrete-structured apartment building. Different structure types were applied to the case site and their carbon emissions were compared. The study also explains the composition of concrete and determines the factors that cause its carbon emissions, and as a result a lower-emission solution was calculated for the case site on the basis of the comparisons.
According to the study, structural design and material choices in a residential apartment building currently can affect the carbon emissions of the construction phase by at least 25 percent. Minor changes are a good start, but even more changes are needed to achieve carbon neutrality.
Concrete construction is constantly being developed to lower its emissions by modernizing concrete components and processing methods, but also by optimizing the structural implementations and spreading information on carbon emissions. Concrete construction is and will be a significant part of Finland's building stock.
