Content management systems are software applications that allow users to create and manage their website’s content without having any prior programming knowledge. There are numerous content management systems available that provide better accessibility, optimization and security at minimal cost with a maximum user-friendly system. However, it requires deep research and literatures to study and compare the most important criteria of CMS while making selection.
The objective of this thesis was to study three popular content management systems and compare their features on five important criteria. This thesis aims to provide a systematic review of three most commonly used CMS products WordPress, Joomla and Drupal. The comparison was made on the most important criteria such as system requirements, creating contents, admin panel user experience, search engine optimization, community support and the results were presented by comparing the individual features of those five criteria. The results were obtained from literatures, facts and web research.
The study concludes that WordPress is most suitable for beginners and novice developers whereas Joomla was found to be most applicable for the creation of large content websites which offered highly enriched customization features. On the other hand, Drupal was found to be applicable for developers with good programming skills for high-level customization and creation of complex websites. This study aims to help the users understand three most popular CMS products and analyze their critical features to apply in any website development project.
