The purpose of this qualitative study is to create an understanding and knowledge of how the social approach and autonomy of persons with intellectual disabilities are fulfilled in care.
The study is conducted with structured interviews as a collection method and analyzed through a qualitative content analysis. The participants in the study consist of eight people who work in healthcare and at some point have been in contact with or is working with people with intellectual disabilities. The theoretical starting point used is Ida Jean Orlando's (1961) theory of reflective nursing process.
Out of the results emerged ignorance regarding the social approach and autonomy, but also generally about persons with intellectual disabilities. The participants agreed that a good social approach is met through individuality, equality and respect. It also emerged that it is not easy to know where the boundary goes for autonomy and this is an interpretation issue.
