Opinnäytetyön aineisto on kerätty kesällä 2018 toteutetulla verkkokyselyllä, johon vastasi 134 ihmistä. Kyselyyn vastanneet ihmiset olivat hyvin heterogeeninen joukko taustatiedoiltaan.
Katuvalle tärkeä teema on luottamus, jolloin hänen on mahdollista avoimesti tunnustaa oma vajavaisuutensa. This thesis describes and explores how a member of the Orthodox Church experiences the mystery of repentance for his own well-being, as well as what is the importance of the Confessor in the Mystery of Repentance to a member of the Orthodox Church. The mystery of repentance is a delivery in where a human repentant of his sins confesses them to God while a priest is acting as a witness. The Christian Church minds sin to be the thing that separates human from God. In the mystery of repentance, human therefore reconciles with his own creator and redeemer. The aim has been to produce important new information on a less clarified subject, with the potential to develop themes related to mystery. The thesis has been carried out in collaboration with the Orthodox Parish of Joensuu.
The thesis data was collected through an online survey conducted in the summer of 2018, which was answered by 134 people. The people who responded to the survey were a very heterogeneous group with their background information. The survey produced a qualitative data set that was analysed using the content analysis method, utilizing the Atlas.ti analysis software.
What awoke from the material was the observation that the mystery of repentance may support a person's own experience of well-being, but it can also undermine it. Repentance offers a human a place where he can confess his own sinfulness and gain exemption from it in absolution. This brings a repentant person peace of mind. Defendants also felt repentance increased anxiety before the confession of sin in the church and the emission of sin. This experience rises as a human prepares for the mystery of repentance, causing him to explore himself and his own life. However, respondents felt this was often temporary and after absolution they felt they were more liberated, than before it.
The negative effect produced by the mystery of repentance relates to the repentance person's relationship with the Confessor, that is, the priest, and his activities. For the repentant, an important theme is confidence, making it possible for him to openly acknowledge his own shortcomings. If the priest is not present in the mystery of repentance, or there is a tension between the repentant person and the priest's persona, it is difficult for him to confess his sins to the Confessor. This means that the importance of the Confessor to a member of the Orthodox Church attending the Mystery of Repentance is central. The conclusion of the thesis is that the mystery of repentance is a remarkable delivery for church members.
