This thesis is a cooperative action research aimed at developing the work community which was involved in the study and their well-being at work. In addition to myself, the team consisted of four dance teachers from the Art School of Oulu-opisto. The objectives of the study have been shaped by the need for work community members to collaborate with their colleagues to increase professional skills and well-being at work.
For the purpose of this study we strove to improve the functioning and well-being at work by examining the role of interaction within dance teachers' work from the participating dance teachers’ perspective. We used cooperative work and learning to address the topic. Also, studying the effects of the cooperative work on teachers' perceptions was one approach to this study. The experiences that teachers shared with each other and the peer support they brought to each other played a significant role in the work.
In my research, I utilized methods of action research and cooperative work and learning. The theoretical basis of my research consists of interaction and the well-being of the teacher and the work community at work. I study the interaction in the context of teaching and art pedagogy and the well-being at work by handling the factors that affect it. In the last part of the study, I focus on the cooperative work process and examine its effects through the research material.
The research material consists of the questionnaire I sent to the dance teachers when starting the research, the diary I compiled based on the work process and the ending questionnaire. In the first questionnaire, I mapped the teachers' views on the nature of interaction within dance and dance teaching. In the final questionnaire, the teachers reflect on the impact of the cooperative work process on those perceptions and on their own and the work community's well-being at work. I used thematic analysis in my research.
The analysis of the research material shows that action research has been successful in developing the functioning and well-being of the dance teachers participating in the research. According to the teachers, their perceptions of interaction in dance teaching have strengthened and diversified and thus influenced their work. They attach particular importance to working with colleagues and the peer support they receive from them. The teachers feel that their well-being at work has improved and experience that they have a work community around them. The study provides an encouraging example of development-oriented cooperation and peer support for dance teachers and work communities involved in dance education.
