The aim of the thesis was to study the effects of soil improvers on the activity of soil microbes and microfauna. The field experiment was established in 2014 at the Lepaa unit of the Häme University of Applied Sciences in cooperation with Humuspehtoori Oy. This thesis covers measurements of the fifth year of a ten-year experiment.
The experiment field plot is approximately the size of one hectare, with a total of 32 experimental plots each the size of 345 m2. There are eight different treatments in the experiment and four replicates of each treatment. Half of the plots were treated with soil enrichments that are slowly soluble, nutrient-enriched organic matter and wood fibers. Some plots were treated with chemical fertilizers, and some were treated with a subsoil plough in the first year of the experiment. There is one control square in every replicate which is not treated in any way.
In the microbiological experiment the soil bacteria were determined by statistically counting the amount of bacterial colony in the plate culture. The formation of mycelium in the soil was studied by examining the number of mycelium visible in the samples under a microscope. In the soil respiration measurements, the activity of soil microbes was determined by the carbon dioxide released from the soil. Organic matter content from the soil was measured by the previously dried soil samples. The results were processed by statistical processing program and the results of different treatments were compared with others.
The most reliable results were found in soil respiration measurement regarding the effects of soil enrichment on microbial activity and thereby positively affect plant growth in the field. Based on the results, soil respiration was higher in those plots to which organic soil enrichments had been added. No significant statistical differences were found in the amounts of mycelium and bacteria between the treatment.
