Tarkoituksena on jakaa määräaikaiskatsastajan työtehtävät pienempiin osakokonaisuuksiin. This thesis was assigned by K1 Katsastus Kaarina. The purpose of this thesis was to provide the company with an overview about the ergonomic conditions of the vehicle inspection industry in Finland. This thesis researches the commonness and causes of vehicle inspectors’ musculoskeletal system diseases. The idea was to separate the inspectors’ work phases into smaller stages and address them individually.
This thesis starts with a short introduction about K1 Katsastus Kaarina. After the introduction ergonomics is examined at a general level. The different aspects of ergonomics and its history are also introduced in the same chapter as well it’s impacts on working atmosphere and the wellbeing of workers The fourth chapter of this thesis covers the tasks that a vehicle inspector must carry out daily. The same chapter contains the most important legislation of the automotive inspection industry. A survey that addresses the ergonomics of periodic vehicle inspectors was conducted on a website called Webropolsurveys. The survey was distributed through Yksityisten katsastustoimipaikkojen liitto Ry.
Based on the survey results, the ergonomics of vehicle inspectors has improved over the years. Nevertheless, there are still a number of unilateral working positions which are physically experienced as stressing to the human body. Neck and shoulder pain are the two most usual reasons that cause discomfort or even pain to vehicle inspectors. The pain usually originates from conducting the undercarriage inspection. Constant crouching or bending over can also be experienced as stressful, for example placing the metering instrument of the exhaust gas emission analyzer.
Solutions to the problems identified in this thesis could be found in the future by developing new kinds of working instruments and methods for the inspectors. The influence of the new innovations could be measured with surveys and the direction of the progress could be examined by comparing the received results to the results of this thesis. A new research concerning the psychical burden that affects the inspectors could also be conducted on behalf of this thesis.
