In critical care nursing, competence develops gradually. The transition from novice to competent in acute care settings can take years. Orientation in critical care nursing is a challenging matter. From an employee’s point of view, the period of uncertainty usually exceeds the period of orientation. New graduates in particular experience the highest stress-levels and lowest job satisfaction after six to nine months of experience in critical care. These challenges have been successfully faced by developing gradual orientation and comprehensive orientation programs. Virtual orientation, on the other hand, is a mixture of theoretical knowledge and local practices presented in a digital format that utilizes the possibilities of multimedia. The qualities of suitable e-learning materials and experiences from the healthcare field are also presented in this thesis.
This thesis is a development project. The objective of this thesis is to develop advanced virtual orientation for critical care nurses with six to nine months of working experience. The focus group is critical care nurses who have already completed initial orientation and need support in taking on new advanced tasks. This thesis aims to help advanced beginners face new responsibilities by providing an easily accessed way to develop their competence.
The process of creating virtual orientation modules included many stages. First, familiarization with the focus group was executed through interviews and literature. Topics for the virtual orientation were chosen in an interprofessional team, taking into consideration needs arising from the focus group. Available digital tools were introduced, and scripts were made for each orientation module. Needed theoretical and multimedia content was produced with the help of the interprofessional team. After creating the modules, they were piloted with end-users to receive feedback about the usability. In the final stage, changes were made according to the feedback. This thesis was carried out as part of the SoTeVi -project and had access to its resources.
In the future, the content of virtual orientation modules should be widened, and their impact on competence and orientation satisfaction should be studied.
