The aim of this thesis was to assess the sufficiency of air quantities for the current personnel at emergency response centres. The Emergency Response Centre Agency, for whom the project was carried out, provides emergency response centre services in Finland, with the exception of the Åland Islands. There are six emergency response centres, located in Kerava, Kuopio, Oulu, Pori, Turku and Vaasa. Calls and notifications to the emergency response centres are handled in the centres’ control rooms. From time to time, call handlers have voiced their concerns that the amount of supply air in the control rooms is insufficient. Carbon dioxide is hazardous to humans in large quantities, and the amount of carbon dioxide is relative to the amount of impurities released into the indoor air via human respiration and the skin. In this thesis, the sufficiency of air quantities was assessed based on carbon dioxide levels and on levels outlined in indoor air recommendations.
The thesis examined the theory of room ventilation and carbon dioxide produced by humans, as well as the effect that the quantity and volume of ventilation have on carbon dioxide levels. To assess the sufficiency of air quantities, carbon dioxide levels were computationally calculated using initial data from the sites and mathematical formulae. In addition, the project involved measuring carbon dioxide levels at one emergency response centre with measuring equipment for one week. Carbon dioxide level measurement data was retrieved from the property’s building automation system for the same timeframe. The true number of people at the centre was also ascertained during the measurement period, which helped to model changes in carbon dioxide levels. The calculated and measured results were compared to one another.
The measured and calculated carbon dioxide levels were found to be almost identical. The only difference in the findings was that measured, realized carbon dioxide levels were observed to be slightly lower than the calculated levels. Based on the results, it was concluded that calculations offered an appropriate estimate of the sufficiency of air quantities. Based on the results, it was concluded that ventilation at all emergency response centres was sufficient, even when fully staffed. The final project was successfully completed as planned. The results of this work can be utilized as presented.
