This study deals with supporting teaching with Green Care activities in a vocational special needs education institute. The purpose was to provide special needs education with alternatives for supporting instruction by including and using different green environments. It also aimed to promote more comprehensive wellbeing and health among students by strengthening their connection with nature. The study was implemented in cooperation with the preparatory education for work and independent living at the Pori Unit of Luovi Vocational College. It was participated by the students involved in the preparatory education group during the academic term 2017–2018 as well as teaching and tutoring staff.
The theoretical section of this study presents the main features of vocational special needs education, and the different areas of the Finnish Green Care service model and most relevant knowledge base. The report presents the Green Care methods and how these were utilised in supporting special needs education in the empirical section of the study.
This study was implemented as a two-part empirical development project comprising the Green Empowerment Week theme week and the Green Empowerment File method guide compiled based on the former. The theme week presented the Green Care activities to the students as well as teaching and tutoring staff, and used feedback collected on the activities to chart the meaningfulness and applicability of the activities to the students in vocational special needs education. The operating ideas used during the theme week were compiled into the method file.
This study resulted in developing the “Green Empowerment File” based on the Green Care activities for the use by Luovi Vocational College. The file contains a concise information kit of the Green Care method and its benefits to special needs students. It includes ideas for acting, instructions, and literature and online sources. The method file was made available in both paper and electronic format. It can be easily implemented and utilised in Luovi Vocational College operations across Finland.
The study questions the idea of teaching occurring in a traditional classroom as the ideal learning environment for the wellbeing and learning of special needs students. In the of the method file, this study provides a practical solution for incorporating education occurring outside traditional classroom settings in vocational special needs education.
Based on the feedback collected on the study, both students and teachers had a positive view on introducing activities based on the Green Care methods. The teaching and tutoring staff felt that there was need for these sorts of activities, and found the method file a good tool for organising activities. The feedback indicated that regular use of Green Care activities to support education would be useful and inspiring, not only from the perspective of learning but also more comprehensive wellbeing.
