Children's most common infections and their prevention- A guide for guardians and the personnel of early childhood education. ABSTRACT The thesis was conducted in co-operation with the early childhood education of the city of Hamina (Linnoitus day care center). The purpose of this thesis was primarily to increase the knowledge of infections among the children’s guardians and the employees of the early childhood education, but also to reduce the incidence of infections in the area of Hamina. The pursued long-term objective was to guide guardians to the responsible use of antibiotics and consequently prevent the growth and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Infections and their treatment create significant direct and indirect costs for public health care and the national economy, which this thesis also aims to influence.
The children who are attending day care, tend to have 1,5-3 times more infections compared to those children who stay at home. This is mainly due to the plenitude of contact that the children get at day care, but also the immune system that is not fully matured. The incidence of infections is particularly high during the first two years of a child’s life, with an average of 5 to 10 infections per year. After this, infections will usually continue to occur with 2-3 infections per year, possibly more, as the individual variability is large.
The thesis was implemented as a functional project, which resulted in a concrete infection guide. In order to maximize the effectiveness of the guide, it was also presented and substantiated to the target audience at parent’s meeting as well as to the personnel of Linnoitus day care centre. The goal was to create a clear, informative, and easily understandable guide with a disease chart with comprehensive symptom descriptions, treatment and absence / isolation guidelines. There was also a section in the guide that went through guidelines for a child’s antipyretic medication at home, practical steps in infection prevention, evaluating the child’s general condition and need for a health care professional’s assessment. In addition, the guide was accompanied by Kymsote’s detailed instructions on hand hygiene, coughing and sneezing hygiene and how to get rid of lice and pinworms. The report section of the thesis presents the theory used as a basis for the guide and describes the process of making the guide.
