Työn myötä yrityksen tietoisuus tuotannon päivittäisistä ongelmista on lisääntynyt, jonka johdosta päätöksenteko tuotannon nykytilan kehittämisestä on helpompaa. The purpose of this thesis was research and develop the current state of a machining workshop operating in the subcontracting industry, to find areas for improvement and propose solutions to problems in order to develop daily work. Approximately 75 % of the company’s total orders are products that have not been manufactured before. The products are versatile repair and maintenance work that requires machining, and the manufacturing of entirely new parts from the customer drawings. Demand forecasting is challenging and lead times for orders are not fully known.
The theoretical section opens a theoretical base related to the company’s production. The latter theoretical part deals with the development methods proposed and used in the thesis. In the empirical part of the work the personnel was interviewed, the machining workshop facility was observed and processes were modeled and analysed.
As a result of the thesis, problems of daily work and several areas for improvement were identified. The proposals for improvement included the introduction of a cost-effective 5S-tool for production and the creation of a new form to improve the daily information flow. In addition to this, for the development of the business solutions to the problems identified with the layout, production control and product lead times were presented.
The study has increased the company’s awareness of the daily problems in production and makes decision-making of the development on the current state of the operations easier.
