The purpose of this thesis was to examine what kind of spending habits upper secondary school students have. The purpose was also to find out what and with whom upper secondary school students discuss about money and whether they save or invest their money. The thesis was commissioned by Turku University of Applied Sciences and the study was to serve as a preliminary study of the spending habits of the young people.
The study was conducted as a Webropol-survey, where most of the questions were closed-ended questions with the respondent being able to choose one or more answer options depending on the question. There were also open-ended questions that sought to obtain more accurate information of the respondent’s use of money. The questionnaire was sent to 20 upper secondary school principals across Finland and the principals were asked to share the link of the questionnaire with the students through teachers. The survey received 375 responses.
According to the survey, spending money among upper secondary school students does not raise concerns. For example, none of the respondents had taken a quickie loan and 99 % of the respondents would not even take one if they were in a difficult situation. Up to 84 % of young people said they had made regular or occasional savings. Saving was the most popular answer for spending money after the cafes and restaurants.
The survey clearly showed that upper secondary school students are not very active investors. Only 18 % of the respondents had invested regularly or occasionally. Whether or not someone else, such as a parent, had invested on behalf of the young, seemed to have an effect on the young’s own investing. Also, those who had discussed about investing at home, at school, or with friends had invested more than those who had not discussed investing with anyone.
