The aim of this study was to develop the mathematical learning environment of one kindergarten in Turku. It was the desire of the client that development would be based involving collaboration with the participants of the research. During the research process the aim was to study how developing the mathematical learning environment would increase mathematics in the kindergarten and how educators’ mindsets would change towards teaching mathematics during this developing.
The study was executed as action research between April 2019 and November 2019. A structured survey was used to evaluate the base level of teaching mathematics in the kindergarten. The whole research process was observed, and observations were recorded in a research diary which was later used to form the development process. An open survey was used to reveal how the educators experienced the development process and an interview was used to collect information on changes in pedagogic leadership and the development process. Finally a structured survey was used at the end of the study to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention.
Development of the mathematical learning environment produced mathematical teaching material and increased the level of teaching of mathematics in the kindergarten. The use of mathematics also increased in the daily activities with the children. Educators became more aware of mathematics and reflected on their own behavior and the learning environment based on their increased knowledge of mathematics. Following the study, educators continue the use of the development model they created with their groups in the kindergarten.
