My goal is to be part of the change in making mental health work more human-centered; to make sure that the meaningful encounter between people is not so arbitrary. My second goal is to consider how I can support the process of recovery of mental health rehabilitators as a drama instructor. What professional skills do I need for it? In my thesis, I have a dialogue between my two roles, “drama instructor” and “someone close to a mental health rehabilitator”. I open the path of care my loved one has gone through and the treatment challenges we have faced. These help in understanding what being close to a mental health rehabilitator means, and with what kind of things those who have fallen ill and those close to them are often left to deal with alone.
Recovery and remedial mental health work in Finland, ie care, nursing and rehabilitation, form the frame for my thesis. I present different organisations and people active in the field of arts, health and well-being in Finland who work with mental health rehabilitators or their close ones. I also give a brief overview of the research on the subject. I expand upon my professional skills as a drama instructor through the competencies of an artist who works in the field of applying arts. In addition, I have interviewed two mental health rehabilitators about their experiences of mental health rehabilitation and recovery.
Based on the interviews, my work experience and my experiences as someone close to a mental health rehabilitator, I submit that as a drama intstructor I have a lot to offer in mental health services as well as in the personal recovery processes of rehabilitators. Recovery includes change in self, in social roles and in interaction. Artist’s personality, professional skills in instructing groups, the understanding of how certain topics and ways to work are appropriate for a certain group and artistic compentencies are essential in supporting recovery.
In my thesis I submit that professional artists, who understand about interaction and connecting with people, would be hired to complement mental health services. In remedial mental health work artist's primary tasks would be having meaningful encounters with those who have fallen ill, supporting their recovery and helping them maintain hope. Ideally, artist-guided groups would not only be available for the select few, but would be accessible as a part of holistic mental health care and rehabilitation for those who are interested in them.
