Tiivistelmä
The reality of modern nursing today in a society which is becoming rapidly multicultural, is caring for people of diverse backgrounds with different cultures, customs and beliefs. As globalisation and diversity hits the world, those barriers that once separated cultures both domestically and internationally are being lowered as these societies are becoming multiethnic and polycultural. It is therefore important that nurses become culturally competent so as to be able to meet the needs of these culturally diverse population. The purpose of this qualitative study is to find out the process of becoming culturally competent in nursing among among the Swedish nursing students in Novia during their study period. The study was carried at the University of Applied Sciences Novia, Vasa. Campinha-Bacote (2010) model on the process of cultural competence in the delivery of healthcare services was used as the framework of the study. A convenient sample of 20 participants were selected for the study. Literature and materials for the study was search comprehensively using the Novia e-resource Finna portal computerised based such as CINAHL, EBSCO host, Academic search Elite, health source nursing, google scholar and also manual search from Tritonia library. The findings from this study shows that, as the society rapidly becomes multicultural, nurses will need to improve on the lapses in cultural knowledge and the level of cultural exposure so as to build on their competency and better equip themselves to providing competent cultural healthcare services. As such, there is the need for the nursing educators at healthcare institutions to help nursing students better achieve this goal.
