Tiivistelmä
Kirjallisessa opinnäytetyössäni tarkastelen kulttuurin mahdollisia vaikutuksia kuvataiteeseen, tarkemmin valokuvataiteeseen kolmen eri maista tulevan valokuvaajan töissä.
The objective of this thesis work is to reflect upon the possible correlations between culture and visual art by looking into the three contemporary photographers Hertta Kiiski, Senta Simond and Yvonne Todd, who all come from different countries, namely, Finland, Switzerland and New Zealand. This was done in order to find certain factors of influence but also to raise questions and curiosity.
The photography of the three artists is described and put into comparison with one another, as well as several aspects of their lives and countries that were considered significant. Additionally, a small group of individuals who are consulted for the purpose of this investigation take a stance on the cultural aspects they find in selected photographs.
Results were not easily defined but conclusively it seems as if education, history, political topics (e.g. feminism) and language are all important sources of influence on the artists, and also people of their relatively immediate surroundings sharing the same culture, such as family members or other artists. However, an investigation of a larger scale, isolating one relationship between culture and visual art, would be required in order to establish clearer facts.
