This thesis is about self-determination and participation of people with intellectual disabilities. For people with intellectual disabilities, self-determination and participation are not obvious.
The purpose of this thesis is to study self-determination and participation of persons with intellectual disabilities. The purpose is also to increase understanding of how self-determination works in practice, from the staff's perspective. The questions to describe this were 1. How do you approach the right to self-determination and participation in people with intellectual disabilities? 2. How could one develop the possibility of self-determination and participation for a person with intellectual disabilities? I did a qualitative study with interviews. I chose to interview 5 people working in different homes for people with intellectual disabilities. The informants were of different ages with different long working experience. I did a qualitative content analysis of the collected material. Katie Eriksson's suffering was used as a theoretical starting point.
The result showed how important it is with support and conversation and that the caregiver has an important role. It was also found that the lack of support staff and staff shortage limits the possibility of participation and self-determination.
