This thesis aims to examine social counsellors’ ability to deal with adolescents who identify as lgbtiq. The social counsellors work at schools in Ostrobothnia. Ability is defined as competence and resources. The research questions are as followed: How does the counsellors experience their competence to deal with adolescents who identify as lgbtiq? What resources does the counsellors have for individual work with teenagers who identify as lgbtiq? What resources does the counsellors have for general work with teenagers who identify as lgbtiq?
The research was performed through qualitative interviews with four counsellors who works at schools, in Swedish, with adolescents in Ostrobothnia. The results were analysed theoretical with Queer theory, specific the theory about heteronormativity.
This study shows that the ability and capacity to meet and deal with adolescents who identify as lgbtiq varies a lot from counsellor to counsellor. The counsellors experienced that they did not have good enough competence and knowledge to deal with adolescents who identify as lgbtiq. All the counsellors wished to have further education in this field. The counsellors said that they do not have enough resources for neither individual nor general work with adolescents who identify as lgbtiq. Tendencies of heteronormativity and the consequences of it for adolescents is seen in the results of this thesis.
