Tiivistelmä
Opinnäytetyö perustuu joukkoliikennemuotona toimivan kaupunkipyöräpalvelun asiakkaiden käyttötottumuksista perustuvaan tutkimukseen, joka toteutettiin tämän opinnäytetyön toimeksi antaneelle Turun seudun joukkoliikenteelle. Opinnäytetyö pohjautuu palvelun asiakasrajapintaan, jota tutkittiin tietojenkäsittelytieteen (data science) sekä liiketoimintatiedon hallinnan (business intelligence) menetelmien avulla.
Tutkimuksen pääasiallisina, konkreettisen tulkinnan kohteena olivat avoimen datan rajapinnan kautta toimitettu ensisijainen tietoaineisto palvelun toimintaan kuuluvien noutopisteasemien dokumentoiduista tilatiedoista sekä Turun seudun joukkoliikenteen suoraan toimittamat ensisijaiset tietoaineistot palvelun asiakkaiden aktiivisuudesta.
This thesis was a case-based customer behaviour research study regarding the public transportation service of the Turku Regional Public Transport Service that utilizes publicly available bikes for operating in an urban environment. The research was based on qualitative and quantitative methods in order to generate developmentally sustainable and valuable information regarding how customers interact with the service and what are the reasons behind their actions. The research was conducted by the means of data science and business intelligence. The research was conducted for Turku Regional Public Transport Service. The research included primary and secondary data as information sources. The primary data wasprincipally based on the available open data of bike sharing stations, where the bikes are originally located in. Additional primary data was delivered by Turku Regional Public Transport Service which was based on the activity of customers who had bought a service specific product and customers who had purchased a seasonal product and utilized either one as a payment method to utilize the service.
To further interpret customer behaviour, the research also included secondary data which was based on the open data of the Finnish Meteorological Institute and the city of Turku. The open data of Finnish Meteorological Institute included information regarding the weather reports from the time of when the data was collected (15th June – 31st July). The open data from the city of Turku included information regarding the urban- and suburban cycling network. The entirety of the research was completed by a survey, intended to work as an intermediate between the customers and the service. The survey results were included as a part of this research in order to collect feedback from the service for the purpose of finding a correlation between the feedback and research results. The primary data supported a palpable perspective whilst the secondary data supported a hypothetical perspective while the research results were interpreted.
Customers were found out to be utilizing the service mostly around the eastern part of Turku city centre, based on the calculated bike sharing station productivity and activity. Customers were also found out to be utilizing the service during the early hours from Monday to Friday and evenly throughout the day from Saturday to Sunday, influenced by the calculated utilization rate, reported amount of traffic, and reported purposes of use that were collected from survey feedback. The most popular product types were found out to be service specific. The eastern part of the city centre was found out to be one of the most accessible parts of the service’s operating environment. The city centre in general was also found out to be the most regionally suitable for the service, influenced by the cycling network and compact scattering of bike sharing stations around the service’s operating environment.
As a conclusion from the research, the most determining factors regarding customer behaviour were found out to be location, regional suitability, accessibility, traffic, product types as well as date and time of day.
