Tiivistelmä
Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli kartoittaa transsukupuolisuuden herättämiä tunnekokemuksia transsukupuolisen henkilön läheisen elämässä. Opinnäytetyö toteutettiin kvalitatiivisena eli laadullisena tutkimuksena käyttäen harkinnanvaraista otantaa. Tutkimusmenetelmänä oli puolistrukturoitu haastattelu. Haastatellut olivat erään transsukupuolisen henkilön läheisiä. Haastattelukierroksia oli kolme (3): Ensimmäisellä haastattelukierroksella haastateltiin seitsemää (7) henkilöä, toisella haastattelukierroksella haastateltiin neljää (4) henkilöä ja kolmannella haastattelukierroksella haastateltiin yhtä (1) henkilöä. Aineisto analysoitiin teemoittelulla. Tutkimuskysymyksen mukaisesti jokaiselta haastattelukierrokselta nostettiin teemaksi tunnekokemus.
The purpose of this thesis was to map out the emotional experiences in the life of a close person to a transsexual person. The thesis was carried out as a qualitative study by using a discretionary sampling. The research method was a semi-structured interview. The interviewees were close to a transgender person. There were three (3) interview rounds: Seven (7) people were interviewed in the first interview round, four (4) people were interviewed in the second round and one (1) person was interviewed in the third round of interviews. The data was analysed by thematic analysis. According to the research question, the emotional experience was raised as a theme from each interview round. In addition, the importance of media and church support also emerged as themes in the first round of interviews, and biological continuation in the second round of interviews.
Based on the data, the close persons of a transsexual experienced joy, relief and fear as well as confusion and grief concerning the gender validation and its process. In addition to these emotions, emotional experiences were coloured by the aspects of both the requirements of legislation on forced sterilization and the obstruction of biological family formation – a matter that the European Court of Human Rights has found to be a human rights violation.
The results point out that the close persons of a transsexual have shifted their personal feelings aside and left them unsaid, fearing that it would be unacceptable or would be burdening the relationship. The gender validation process will also affect the close persons of the individual, who is undergoing the process, in different ways and cause symptoms such as stress. Disenfranchised grief was a discovery made during the research process and it described as a notion of the experiences of a close person of a transsexual well.
