Opinnäytetyön teoriaosuudessa on kaksi päälukua. The objectives of internal and external audits are similar and that allows external auditors to utilize the work done by internal auditors in their own auditing activities. The objective of this thesis was to examine the utilization of internal audit in external auditing. The aim was to find out which factors influence the utilization of internal audit and what impact digitalization and automation have on the cooperation between external and internal auditing.
The ethical study of the thesis consists of two main chapters. The first main chapter introduces the external and internal audit activities in general and the second main chapter describes the cooperation between the audit functions. The theoretical study was based on scientific articles, literature and internet sources. The survey was accomplished using a qualitative research method by interviewing seven external auditors.
Based on the results of the survey, external auditors always pay attention to the internal audit in their own operations and this is done to reduce the work of external auditors. There is no quantitative limit to the use of internal audit, but external auditors always judge the reliability of the internal audit before starting cooperation. Based on the results, digitalization and automation have the effect of facilitating cooperation between the audit functions, but it may also make it difficult for external auditors to rely on the internal audit.
