The objective of our thesis was to produce an informative guidebook for women with cancer. The guide contains different methods on how to maintain your fertility. The information on this guidebook will also help health care professionals to guide and inform their patients at their outpatient clinic. The meaning of this thesis is to support and promote women’s knowledge on different opportunities, reasons and procedures in maintaining your fertility during cancer treatments. The idea came from our client the University hospital of Kuopio, gynaecological outpatient clinic. The output of the thesis was developed together with the outpatient clinic. The material for the thesis report was document based and worked as a baseline for the guide. In the theory section of the written report different subjects were discussed such as fertility and female anatomy. Also, topics such as cancer and fertility, maintaining fertility, different procedures and providing information as a healthcare professional were discussed. The guide maintained information on fertility and how cancer treatments affect it, evaluating how fertile you are as a patient and how ovary tissue is collected such as the risks of this procedure. The guidebook also maintains information on how to get pregnant after cancer treatments.
The guide was patientcentered and developed so that it was easy to read and understand. It was accepted for use for the patients at the outpatient clinic. There is also an online version available that can be printed at any time. Both patients and healthcare professionals at the gynaecological outpatient clinic benefit from the guide. Patients can become familiar with the topics in their own time and paste, while healthcare professionals get more tools and information on guiding the patient.
The thesis could be developed later so that male and cancer patients under the fertile age could get their own informative guidebooks that talk about maintaining fertility. Also, information to get pregnant after cancer could be helpful. There could also be a questionnaire on what specific information women with cancer would need on maintaining fertility.
