The client for this thesis was a security, surveillance and safety technology company Tele-Projekti Oy from Turku, Finland. Their business also includes product sales and importing goods, so having a warehouse is essential. The aim was to create long-term enhancements, break the old patterns and challenge to think from a new perspective. Thesis process and the resulting development plan are building a way towards a more proficient warehousing as well as savings in business.
The material for case study was collected by means of observational research. The observation took place on a random day, unannounced, to get the most authentic results, using a pre-made form based on literature. The data was processed using SWOT analysis, which revealed the current state of the warehouse. Based on the analysis the state was generally speaking quite good. The only real threat as well as huge opportunity appeared to be the ERP system that was about to be introduced.
The development plan introduces a variety of the challenges posed by the new system, such as the importance of thorough implementation and monitoring. Some of the development proposals rely on the information provided by the ERP system in the future, making it easier to, for example, classify items and control inventory. The physical storage space seemed adequate: enough to meet the needs of the company. There was, however, room for improvement in the shelf labelling, regularization of stocktaking and general tidiness of the storage areas.
The thesis project was started back in spring 2017, but the research phase did not start until the end of 2018. There were multiple discussions with the board of the company about the importance of good warehouse management right from the start on. This led to reforming the mindset and attitude of the company through-out the passive phase of the process. Developments outside the research phase weren’t documented and therefore reduced the actual improvement ideas of the final development plan.
