Ilman hyvää mielenterveyden lukutaitoa, nuoren on vaikea kulkea menestyksekkäästi kehityspolkunsa aikuisuuteen (Kutcher ym. 2016). Mielenterveysongelmien tunnistaminen on kriittistä, sillä noin puolet aikuisiässä olevista mielenterveysongelmista on alkanut ennen kuin lapsi täyttää 14 vuotta, ja kolme neljäsosaa ennen 24 vuoden ikää. (Huurre 2013.)
He eivät myöskään tiedä, mistä tarpeen tullen olisi kannattavinta hakea ammattiapua. Paras ja toimivin ratkaisu mielenterveyden lukutaidon kehittämiseen olisi kouluopetus. Koska terveysoppi on kaikille pakollinen, olisi näistä tunneista hyvä käyttää osa mielenterveysopetukseen. Leimaaminen ja ennakkoluulot vähenevät, eikä nuori näin aikanaan siirrä niitä myöskään lapsilleen. Näihin ongelma- ja kehityskohtiin olisi hyvä pureutua tulevissa tutkimuksissa. The purpose of this study was to find out, through previous studies, how adolescents understand the concept of mental health and how to improve mental health literacy among adolescents. The aim was to gather comprehensive but still easily understandable ensemble of mental health’s knowledge and skills among adolescents. The aim was also to indirectly improve the understanding of mental disorders’ recognition among everyone who works with adolescents.
Mental health literacy is skills, knowledge, values and attitudes about mental health (Tuominiemi 2018). Without a good mental health literacy it is difficult for adolescent to become a proper adult (Kutcher etc. 2016). It is critical to recognise mental health problems early as approximately half of grown-ups’ mental disorders have started before the child is 14 years, and three quarters before the 24th birthday (Huurre 2013).
The target group of this study are adolescents and everyone who works with adolescents. The used method was a descriptive literature review. The literature review introduces and compares already existing research data of the topic in question. The results of this study will be exploited in United Nations’ MEGA project.
Based on the results of the research, the most significant challenge in mental health literacy among adolescents is that the topic is left too unspoken at schools. Adolescents don’t know the symptoms of the most common mental disorders and how to construe their possible symptoms right. Furthermore they don’t know where would be the most convenient place to seek help. The best and the most reasonable solution to improve the mental health literacy is the school education. The health education is compulsory subject at schools, so part of these lessons could be used to mental health education. Stigmatizing and prejudices would decrease and the adolescent wouldn’t transfer them to his/hers future children. These challenges and development ideas would need more research on upcoming studies
