Tutkimus toteutettiin toimintatutkimuksena, jossa toteutettiin kaksi sykliä erilaisten onnettomuusharjoitusten muodossa. Aineistoa kerättiin kahdella Webropol-kyselyllä ja yhdellä teemahaastattelulla, joiden analysoinnissa käytettiin kvantitatiivista ja kvalitatiivista tutkimusmenetelmää. Tutkimuksessa hyödynnettiin myös aiempien vuosien harjoituspalautteita, joista analysointiin onnettomuustilanteiden johtamisen näkökulmasta esiin nousseita kehityskohtia.
Työ alkoi Webropol-kyselyllä, jonka avulla selvitettiin Kemin kaivoksen lähtötilanne onnettomuustilanteiden johtamisessa sekä mahdollisia kehityskohteita ja ongelmia. Kyselyjen perusteella selkeiksi kehityskohteiksi nousivat harjoitustoiminnan ja osaamisen kehittäminen.
Opinnäytetyön tuloksena kuvattiin Kemin kaivoksen nykytila onnettomuustilanteiden johtamisen osalta sekä esitettiin ehdotuksia, miten harjoitustoimintaa ja osaamisen varmistamista onnettomuustilanteiden johtamisessa voitaisiin kehittää Kemin kaivokselle.

The aim of the thesis was to find out the current state of knowledge, training and resource management, as well as the potential challenges the company faces from the point of view of accident management.
The research method was an activity study in which two cycles were carried out in the form of various accident exercises. The material was collected by two Webropol inquiries and one thematic interview, which was analysed using a quantitative and qualitative research method. The research also utilised the feedback from previous years, from which development points from the point of view of accident management were analysed.
The work began with a Webropol survey to investigate the origins of the Kemi mine in the management of accident situations, as well as possible development targets and problems. Based on the surveys, the development of training work and skills became clear areas of development.
As a result of the thesis, the current state of the Kemi mine was described as regards the management of accident situations, and proposals for training activities were presented, and the competence to manage accident situations could be developed at the Kemi mine.
